Why was it made?

It was made for educational use to compare resolutions and image sizes. It may not be very useful for experienced graphic designers but it is useful to beginners.
Multicalc
---------
You can open Multicalc window by menu command File->Open Multicalc, or by clicking Unit calculator button.
In Multicalc window there are 4 fields: picas, points, inches and cms. You can calculate any unit you like. Activate the field by clicking the field or if the fields are empty, you can activate the field also by clicking the field name.
You can add, subtract, multiply or divide in witch field you like. Picas are converted into points before any calculation.
You can copy the result from the field to the clipboard by clicking the field name.
